Experience the many ways that cultures around the world celebrate the feminine spirit!
Celebrating Women, the exhibit by the International Museum of Women, presents a sense-rich introduction to the festivals, ceremonies and competitions from around the world that affirm diverse characteristics of the feminine spirit. Based on the book Celebrating Women (powerHouse Books, October 2004) by acclaimed photo-journalist Paola Gianturco, the exhibit features her stunning photography, artifacts, music and compelling accounts of 17 celebrations from Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Finland, French West Indies, India, Morocco, Peru, Poland, Spain, Swaziland, Sweden, Thailand, and the U.S.
The festivals featured in the Celebrating Women exhibit affirm the power of women as athletes, defenders, goddesses, providers, warriors and more. Since different cultures deem different attributes laudable, the exhibit offers a view of how women's roles are defined by community and their identities are informed by tradition. It is an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of ourselves and others, as we strive together for positive social change.
