For me the Guadalupana signifies the representation of loving and positive of motherhood. However, it is obvious there is a dark side of motherhood as well; I've learned this through my experience as a daughter and mother, and it can be seen in icons created by contemporary culture, as in the goddess Coatlicue.

In my performance, I represent both of those mothers; I present distinct characteristics of each maternal archetype.

The performance took place on December 4th 2003, in the Museum of the Popular Cultures during the X Biennial Guadalupano Lo Guadalupano, curated by the artist and critic Aurora Noreña. It lasted approximately two hours. Each person who participated received a small stamp in exchange for the personal history of their mother. There were beautiful and dramatic stories.

Afterwards they participants chose words that defined his/her relationship with their mother, then tore, crushed or folded (whatever they chose) and gave it to me to tuck it in my belly inside the small red apron that I was wearing in the front of my body. Behind me, I carried the doll Maruca, an image that for me represented the bad mother, as well as an image of the Guadalupana.
