Breath in the Ground
The image of the seated figure is one I find myself returning to often, in both paintings and sculpture. I am fascinated by this position in which the figure seems to have given in, or surrendered, to life's circumstances; it appears exhausted by being. The pose is closed and open, strong and weak, heavy and light, all at the same time. These dualities create a tension I find inspiring.

Breath in the Ground, 2008 | Sculpture project at the Preston Contemporary Art Center, New Mexico
I was excited to be given the opportunity and space to create Breath in the Ground for the fall 2008 exhibit at the Preston Contemporary Art Center. Presenting multiple figures together, I created a heightened sense of isolation in each of them, yet strengthened the interaction between them as objects. Each exhibition venue will have a unique configuration, emphasizing the importance of the figures' placement based on the specific location.
