I was so moved by the form, the material, as well as the content. I became involved with each piece and experienced emotional and visual journeys. Wonderful work.

Wood has the capacity to breathe life into a sculpture and capture the essence of its form. Humaira Abid utilizes the organic properties of this material to give her art a rich delicacy that juxtaposes the material's inherent hardness. In Perfect Figure, for example, the rigid outline she carved to represent a corset nevertheless evokes the soft quality of a woman's figure. In Clew in Wood, Abid has intricately carved a depth that is reminiscent not only of a ball of ribbon but the layers of skin and the complexity of a woman's body and soul.
![]() Perfect Figure, 2006 | Carved mahogany and copper | 24” x 16” x 8” Everybody wants a perfect figure these days. Corset, a garment worn to mold and shape the torso into a desired form, inspired Perfect Figure.
![]() The Journey, 2006 | Carved mahogany | 60” x 48” x 48” These two sculptures are bundles, usually used when moving. They are symbols of the journey women take through life. And the rest is NOT silence, 2006 | Carved mahogany and bronze | 30” x 12” x 12” Inspiration for this work came from the painting, Creation of Adam, by Michelangelo. In the painting, God’s masculine hand reaches to touch Adam’s. However, I changed one hand into a female’s hand. My Secret World, 2006 | Carved mahogany | 21” x 13” x 10” My handbag is a very important and dear garment. For women it holds many secret things which we want to keep private. It represents a secret world that we carry with us everywhere. Clew in Wood, 2006 | Carved mahogany | 15” x 12” x 12” This work is inspired from a ball of thread or ribbon, which to me represents complexity. The egg form represents femininity. Combined, the metaphors symbolize either the complicated lives of women or the complicated women themselves. |

Some of the carvings are simple yet thought inspiring. For example the handbag is a part of many of us but taking an more indepth look that it holds our little secrets then it becomes a mystery as to what may actually be in everyones bag!
