My Hair is an Expression of Myself
My Hair is an Expression of Myself
When I’m sad, happy and glad
My hair reflects my style and wellbeing
Whether in curls, weaves, locks or braids,
My hair is confident, beautiful and all mine,
Whether as a busy mum, a career woman or just living my life,
My hair shines, bringing it all together, all the time,
Whether I have bad hair days, good ones or crazy ones,
I need a quick fix, maybe some colours to light up my spirit.
Whether, its short, long, natural or not,
My hair knows for sure, it’s my best friend to date

As an African woman my hair is my crowning glory. It changes my look and can make me feel like a million dollars! The photos I have selected show different ways we play with our hair and different styles we use to express ourselves. I am aware of the long hours spent in hairdressing salons to get the latest look or just to manage our hair. The cost is also a factor in determining what style is chosen. Weaves attached to the natural hair and braids fixed with attachments to achieve length and thickness all contribute to the million dollar hair industry worldwide. In times of despair, I am sometimes tempted to chop it all off. But I am not brave enough yet and hope against hope to always find new and more interesting ways to express my self through my hair. I also want to appreciate my friends, sisters and colleagues who were kind enough to let me photograph them.
