True Colors
Clothing and Identity
In my culture, black is an everyday colour for women when they are outside the home or in other people's houses, whether they are at a wedding party or just doing their shopping. Women also used to wear a long, wide piece of black on top of their clothes to cover what was underneath, because they were not allowed to show any part of their clothing to others. So, black is a color that shows and hides our color. It is not the only colour we wear. I want to show all of the bright colours we wear.
There is nothing there,
What you see is not what you see,
What you see is nothing,
Nothing but shapes, lines, colours, forms, and me.
What you see is what is in my mind.
What you see is something I want to tell you to look for.
What you see is my identity.
Black is my identity,
Black speaks a mute language,
Like flowers, like skies, like setting sun,
Colours on top, black hope, black hiding,
Black in my culture, is beauty, purity, honor,
Black is not death or sadness
and I want to show the colours beyond black.

I was attracted to this work by the colourful scarves tied together in 'above black'. I love the poetry, especially they way it explained our 'black' has many meanings and that is: beautiful.
