In times of armed conflict, women and young girls are more vulnerable to rape and sexual abuse. In the story below, I imagine the reality of Rachela, a young woman from Bosnia Herzegovina, who was raped and left to deal with her memories of the experience and a son born from the event.

Between November 28 and 30, Mary Anne Zammit participated on behalf of the Green Party of Malta in a Mediterranean Network meeting organized by the European Greens in Nicosia, Cyprus. Zammit presented a paper on human rights in non-European Union countries focusing on human trafficking, a problem common in the Balkans and in the Mediterranean region. This article is inspired by the presentation.

There are times when I stop and think about my career and aspirations and instantly my mind travels back to the past and to the women across the ages -- their lives and dreams. And I must say that we should be grateful to them. Our achievements today were once the dreams of women who, in spite of their oppression, had the courage to visualize a better life.

This article story is about illegal immigration which is affecting the Mediterranean region. Every day hundreds of illegal immigrants flee from their countries hoping for a better life. Some do not make it. Amongst these immigrants there is a considerable number of women.
