About me:

Irene Christensen, a Norwegian by birth, is an artist of many parts. In paint and assemblage she is represented in numerous public and private collections worldwide, including MoMA, the Norsk Skogs Museum in Norway and the Bergen Museum in New Jersey.

She has lectured at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC and at the Pen and Brush in New York City as well as The Florida International University Honor Class as well as other institutions.

“Irene Christensen’s art is about painting as a magical act. Her images repeat and are transformed, as words and images in poems. She likes to maintain a sense of wonder in her art.
That life is strange and quirky, and contradictory, that tragedy and comedy are not played out in separate theaters, but co-exist, side by side

From Exhibiting You:

In Irene Christensen's paintings, art becomes a magical act. Her sinous images repeat, loop in on themselves and are transformed into words and images in poems.

Her paintings show that life is strange and quirky, and contradictory, too. Tragedy and comedy are not played out in separate theaters, but co-exist, side by side.

From Exhibiting You:

My paintings are windows onto a world, a surreal world, where images repeat and are transformed into words within poems.

I create personal iconography; I transform simple forms into my own mythology. And although I paint figures and the landscape, they are always symbolic and my colors always set moods rather than imitate nature. In these oil paintings, I meld the familiar and the possible through sensual intuition.
