I'm a New York City based photographer. My second book, "Momma Love: How the Mother Half Lives," will be released May 1st, 2013.
Gloria Steinem says "Ali Smith has given us a gift with Momma Love; a fresh, eye-opening manifestation of motherhood's contemporary realities."
Through 40 women's portraits and personal stories, Momma Love explores with honesty the highs and the lows of the motherhood experience.
My first book of photography, "Laws of the Bandit Queens" (Random House), featured 35 ground breaking women who had succeeded while confronting the status quo with their work. Some Bandit Queens included Alice Walker, Sandra Bernhard, Janeane Garofalo, Susan Faludi, Mary Karr and Geraldine Ferraro.
Momma Love continues that spirit of questioning and investigation, bringing it into the motherhood arena.

I try to be the change I hope to see in the world. (To paraphrase Ghandi). In the realm of motherhood, I did this by choosing a parenting partner who is committed to parenting equality.
I'm passionate about:
Equal treatment of and opportunity for women in the world. Respect for the institution of motherhood. The abolition of domestic violence. The abolition of the trafficking of women and young girls. The humanizing of women and young girls universally.
