A woman's body is both revered and feared in cultural traditions from East to West. It is immortalized as "pin-up girl" and simultaneously mystified as mother. A community of women in Nigeria, however, proved that a woman's body is enough to bring one of the largest oil companies to the bargaining table. When their words were not being heard, they made themselves be seen...by threatening to strip naked in public.

In the summer of 2003, twenty female musicians from Algeria, France and Argentina gathered in a recording studio in Paris, France. Their mission: to overturn Algeria's Family Code -- a set of laws that, for over 20 years, has relegated women to second-class citizenship. Their instrument: a song.

When Mahatma Gandhi envisioned a truly independent and democratic India, he envisioned gram swaraj-village self-rule. For Gandhi, true village autonomy meant that all adults--women and men--work together to ensure their village's self-reliance in meeting basic needs.

Breakthrough is an international human rights organization that uses media, education and pop culture to promote values of dignity, equality and justice. In 2008, we launched our multimedia awareness and intervention campaign Bell Bajao, in English "Ring the Bell," that urges men to take a stand against domestic violence. Our message is simple: Don't pretend that it's not happening. Ring your neighbor's door bell and stop the abuse.
